As a contribution to the international Millennium Development Goal of 'eradicating poverty and hunger' this innovative public/private sector project, the Collaboration on Insect Management for Brassicas in Asia and Africa (CIMBAA) sets out to bring to Asia (initially India) and Africa a safe and sustainable control strategy for controlling damaging insect pests of cabbages and cauliflowers. The collaboration will engineer sustainable insect resistance traits into locally adapted, insect-resistant, cabbage and cauliflower varieties, which will be passed through the regulatory process of countries which would benefit strongly from this material and make it available, free of any technology fees, to local breeders in less developed countries. This will provide significant economic, health and environmental benefits for small-scale farmers and consumers.
